What Type Are You?

  • We ALL have ALL the type energies.
  • But these are in lesser or greater concentrations
  • Only ONE is our ESSENCE type (not personality type).
  • You may find you agree with most of these statements.
  • That – obviously – is because we have ALL the energies – however –
  • Which is MOST like you?
  • Try to ‘audition’ various statements.  You are looking to answer at least 2 questions WITH THE SAME NUMBER
  • Final tip – rule out those that you really are NOT and you will be left with fewer to choose from that you may be

I like:

  1. Bright colours and shiny things
  2. Co-ordinated clothes and expensive perfume/cologne
  3. The latest technology and the newest restaurants
  4. Pursuing serious and worthwhile interests
  5. Physical pursuits and being in charge
  6. Taking care of people and making them feel better

I think of myself as someone who:

  1. Has never really grown up
  2. Is devoted to beauty and the finer things
  3. Is always busy with multiple projects
  4. Is philosophical and questioning
  5. Is dynamic, bold and adventurous
  6. Finds my happiness from making others happy

I do not like

  1. Being controlled or the daily grind
  2. Rude people or having multiple demands
  3. Being told to slow down or being ignored
  4. Exercise or cocktail chatter
  5. Losing or being wrong
  6. Violence or cruelty

ANSWERS

  • There are no wrong or right answers
  • It is not ‘better’ to belong to one type rather than another
  • However, you will find certain things easier or harder depending on your essence type energy
  • Try to find the connections between the three questions
  • Two or more of the same letter points towards your type:

  1. Lunar type
  2. Venus type
  3. Mercury type
  4. Saturn type
  5. Mars type
  6. Jupiter type

  • All types have planetary names
  • No distinction between men and women, race, religion or geographical location.
  • Animals  – especially cats and dogs – have recognisable essence types
  • You are born with essence type and rarely do you change it
  • What are the benefits of understanding your essence type?  It:
  1. explains why others are different from you
  2. Helps you to deal with the problems in other people’s types
  3. shows what to work on to improve your life
  4. helps you to overcome your own inner and outer conflict and frustration
  5. gives you marvellous tools to help others improve their lives

  • You may be wondering – These are only SIX types.  Where do the other six come from?
  • The other 6 are HYBRID types.  Hybrids have the INFLUENCE of two CONSECUTIVE energies.  ie.  Not ‘Lunar’ or ‘Venus’ type, but ‘Lunar-Venus’ type
  • Many individuals discover they are hybrid types.  Click on the link to take the simple quiz  Are you a hybrid type?

  • This work looks very interesting. Judging from the depth and insight of your book, I’m eager to study this site more thoroughly, thank you.

  • Lisa Shendge says:

Why doesn’t there appear to be a Saturn/Jupiter type?

    • There is no Saturn/Jupiter type because that would not be a hybrid. That would be a ‘split’ type. Hybrids are those 6 types that with the 6 main types make up the 12 types so obviously they are similarly important. But a Saturn/Jupiter type is a SPLIT type – and we can have other split types. They exist naturally within the whole of humanity but they are not specific and organised as the 12 types: they are fairly uncommon.
Where people think they are a split type they often are not, they are merely manifesting some of the specific qualities of particular energies – and imagining that that makes them a specific type, as would be a hybrid type.

    Dear Mr Campling,

Thanks for your important and interesting contribution to the theory of Enneagram. I stumbled upon your book at the Waterstones during a browsing session and start flipping through your book… one hour later I was still reading your book. Interesting concepts to say the least, also the resemblance or astrological analogies also come to mind.

Having said this I would be delighted if you can help me detect my type according to your system.

    Many thanks.

ps – my responses are in the brackets.

I think of myself as someone who:

Being told to slow down or being ignored – irrelevant
Exercise or cocktail chatter – [YES, despise cocktail chatter]

Violence or cruelty – [YES, strongly against violence and cruelty – physical and non-physical ]

    • Hello again Mohammad, I think the answers you give in this section do indicate that you are somewhere in the Saturn/Mars and possibly Jupiter type range. When we first discover the 12-Type we have part of us that are not strictly our ‘essence’: by understanding the different type energies we learn to let go of those parts that are not helpful, and more deeply embrace our ‘essence’. You might want to read the whole book and then see – I have written it so that with each chapter the reader learns more about themselves and the types, and who you are becomes more and more clear. Also the parts that are to do with other people help you to see what really is you and them. For example, you might think of yourself as ‘Mars type’ until you meet someone who you really do see is a Mars type – and you see yourself more as a Jupiter type.

    Dear Matthew,

Many thanks for your reply and insightful reading. It has given me ideas to ponder. I’ll be buying the book and shall send you my thoughts.

    Hope you are keeping well.

    Best wishes,
    Akib

  • Kendrix says:

I honestly can’t tell if I’m a Lunar or a Saturn type, both kinda align with me in strenghts, weaknesses and interests, maybe a bit more Lunar-like in social contexts and short-term behavior but more saturn-like in opinions beliefs, values and inner thoughts. It is basically a part of my philosophy that both fun stuff and serious stuff have its time, place and merit
(the others don’t seem like an option – productivity is hard for me and more inspiration than work ethic fueled, competion kinda repells me and I’m not all that social or material though I see the merit in it for others and society)

Are there some ways to differentiate?

For reference, here are my responses:

    I like:

Bright colours and shiny things [Yes~ I have, for example, lot of different bright lipstick/nail polish]
Co-ordinated clothes and expensive perfume/cologne [Sometimes/ lil bit, particularly the colonge, but I’m not too crazy about it]
The latest technology and the newest restaurants [Progress~ New experiences~ More in theory than in practive, tho.]
Pursuing serious and worthwhile interests [Yes very much but I can’t say I’m always disciplined/ don’t kno the value of fun things, but something like this is what makes me the happiest of all options I think]
Physical pursuits and being in charge [Nope.]
Taking care of people and making them feel better [Who doesn’t? But it’s not something I’m good at or spend much time doing]

I think of myself as someone who:

Has never really grown up [No. Children are cruel, ignorance should not be romanticised; But what some people mean by that is resisting growing up in the sense of comformity and that I respect]
Is devoted to beauty and the finer things [Not “devoted” in any way, though I do appreciate them.]
Is always busy with multiple projects [No.]
Is philosophical and questioning [Yes very much. ]
Is dynamic, bold and adventurous [Unfortunately not, I sometimes wish I was more like this but I still like to have my space and quiet]
Finds my happiness from making others happy [Not as immediately/directly as naturally giving or generous people, I see the merit in helping others and I’m glad if something I do is helpful but it’s not the main or even a major source of my hapiness]

    I do not like

Being controlled or the daily grind [YES!]
Rude people or having multiple demands [Rudeness no, multiple demands, well it’s awkward]
Being told to slow down or being ignored [Ignored, yes, told to slow down… never happens, wouldn’t get a visceral response from mw]
Exercise or cocktail chatter [I hate exercise like the plague]
Losing or being wrong [Losing I can live with, being wrong is embarassing and humiliating but it’s also a chance to learn more]
Violence or cruelty [Who DOES like this?]

  • Kat Mobasher says:

I have purchased your book but am still uncertain about my type. I (reluctantly) identify as Lunar, but also find myself taking on “adult” responsibilities, a la Jupiter…wondering if I might be Lunar-Jupiter. Or is that wishful thinking, just not wanting to be the overgrown child (Lunar)? I especially relate to the following aspects of Lunar-Jupiter:
~ Looking for someone to take care of. Or to be taken care of themselves: Find myself resentful that no one “takes care of me,” when I go out of my way to help them. But won’t ASK for help…
~ Very good at accepting people as they are (a coworker of mine once said, “I think you could get along with anyone”; I don’t think that’s true, but it is true that I strive always to understand others…their motivations and how we are intrinsically different.)

  • Phoebe says:

    I
Hi there, i’m reading your book and I can’t pin down what type I am. So far I relate most strongly. to mercury Saturn, but I definitely do not favor quantity over quality (if I just created one amazing work in my life I would be OK, but I would probably continue doing projects just to keep myself fulfilled). I am highly imaginative but also highly logical. I cant stand having to adhere to rules.
    I like:

Bright colours and shiny things NO
Co-ordinated clothes and expensive perfume/cologne ( yes to clothes, no to perfume)
The latest technology and the newest restaurants NO
Pursuing serious and worthwhile interests YES
Physical pursuits and being in charge NO
Taking care of people and making them feel better YES
I think of myself as someone who:

Has never really grown up NO
Is devoted to beauty and the finer things NO
Is always busy with multiple projects NO
    Is philosophical and questioning YES
Is dynamic, bold and adventurous YES
Finds my happiness from making others happy YES
    I do not like

Being controlled or the daily grind YES (meaning yes, I do not like this)
Rude people or having multiple demands. yes to rude people, no to multiple demands
Being told to slow down or being ignored. no to slow down, HATE being ignored

    Exercise or cocktail chatter YES
    Losing or being wrong NO
Violence or cruelty BIG yes (its my #1 pursuit to end animal cruelty)
